Fall 2020 in our strange new world

Hello all Calgary Opera Volunteers,

I wish I could have the opportunity to see and talk to you each in person about how you are doing, how your loved ones are, how you’ve been holding up in these unprecedented times and dealing with the economic, social and mental aspects of society during this pandemic.  It has turned everything upside down and we are still very much feeling the effects of the measures put in place in Canada and across the world.

As many of you likely know, we have postponed our 2020-21 Mainstage productions until the 2021-22 season.  All three grand operas we were preparing to present have been moved forward by one year, as well as our Christmas at the Opera production.  We are re-imagining a season filled with more intimate and exciting pieces both virtual and in-person.

We are very much looking forward to continuing our Emerging Artist Program in this 2020-21 season, as well as our Education and Community Engagement programs in addition to our season’s offerings.  Information on all of these performances and programs can be found on our website at

Should there be an opportunity to volunteer throughout the course of this season, you will find the opportunity here.

Looking forward to seeing you all again. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments.

Keep taking care of yourselves and each other,

Patricia Kesler

COVID-19 Update for volunteers

Hello all Calgary Opera Volunteers,

I sincerely hope you and your families are doing well.  As we have all been living through these past 3 months, socially distancing ourselves from others at home, or continuing to work on the frontlines in Health Care, Transportation, Manufacturing, Food Services, and more,  we’ve all been doing our part to lessen the effects of the extremely contagious Coronavirus.

As we slowly begin to open up and gather together again, the possibility of us meeting for Grand Opera at the Jubilee Auditorium remains distant.  Once we know more about the upcoming season and when we can all be together again, helping, laughing and learning from each other, I will post the information here.

Please check back and please stay safe out there.

As always, I am only a phone call or email away, and I always love to talk.

Welcome back to the 2019-20 Season

Hello to all of Calgary Opera’s wonderful volunteers,

Welcome back or welcome for the first time to our 2019-2020 season.  We are beginning this year with the perennial classic La Boheme by Giacomo Puccini in November followed by Vincenzo Bellini’s Norma in February and finally Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos in April and May.

I look forward to meeting some new volunteers this season and welcoming back all of the familiar faces.  I will be sending out the sign up sheet for Volunteering at La Boheme in the first week of October.

We’ve made some changes to how we’re running things in the lobby of the Jubilee Auditorium this season.  The biggest change is that we no longer have an Opera Shop!  Unfortunately we were not able to keep up with acquiring unique and relevant opera items that really added value to the opera going experience so for now we have closed that door.  We will have the opportunity for more Lineup helpers at the box office as well as will increase our presence in the lobby and by the doors with stationary information volunteers.  We will also be looking for some help at the Will Call table during Dress Rehearsals this year.

Thank you all so much for continuing to choose to spend your time and energy with us here, it is appreciated at every level of the company.

If you have any questions drop me a line at

See you all soon,

Our Bold New Season 2018-2019 Draws to a Close

Thank you so much to all of our volunteers for your hard work, dedication, smiling faces, and kindness, during this entire 2018-2019 season.  It’s been an absolute pleasure working with you all.  Each event had ample volunteers and all of our needs, and in turn the needs of our patrons, were met by your willingness to give us your time and energy.  What an amazing gift, thank you.

I look forward to an exciting 2019-2020 season which was officially launched yesterday.  See our season launch video here on YouTube or on our Facebook page:

Looking forward to another year of fun, working together and, as always, opera!

All the best to you all,

Welcome to Rigoletto, our final Mainstage Production in the 2018/19 Season

Hello to all Calgary Opera Volunteers,

Welcome to our final show of the season, Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto, with libretto by Francesco Maria Piave.  The show premiered just over 168 years ago on March 11, 1851 at the Theatre La Fenice in Venice, Italy.  Since then Rigoletto has become a standard of modern opera house repertoire and a classic for so many reasons.

I hope you can join us for the show at the Jubilee Auditorium with Dress Rehearsal on Thursday, April 4th at 7pm, and Mainstage shows on April 6, 10 and 12, all at 7:30pm.

I would like to thank each and every one of you for a successful and fun season at the Opera.  I’ve had the opportunity to meet you all and see the dedication you put into your time with us.  It has been grand and I look forward to doing it all over again next year.

Looking forward to seeing you all at Rigoletto!

All the best,

Happy 2019! Welcome to Everest.

I am wishing you all a happy new year 2019! I hope you all had wonderful holidays filled with loved ones, good food and good times.

Welcome to show two of our season, Everest. This story is based on the true-life experiences of Dallas doctor Beck Weathers in his attempted climb up Mt Everest in 1996. Dr. Weathers was left for dead 2 times, as is practice in the highest elevations of the mountain, but he made it down alive. A harrowing tale filled with flashbacks, heroism and tragedy.  I am looking forward to working with you all at the Jubilee.  See you in February!

Christmas Bake Sale! In Support of our Emerging Artists

Do you love Christmas baking? We’d love to sample some of your delicious treats! We’ll be hosting a bake sale as part of our Christmas at the Opera show. Proceeds from the sale will go towards our Emerging Artist Program.

Baked Goods can be dropped off on December 7th or 8th at the Mamdani Opera Centre at 1315 7th Street SW between 9am – 5pm.

Your goods will then be packaged up and put on sale at each of our Christmas shows. We’ll have a sign with your name represented as the baker!

If you’ve signed up for a shift to sell the baked goods at a show, you can either bring your goods to your shift or to one of the dates above. If you’re signed up for one of these shifts, it is not required that you bring in baked goods – we just need help selling them as well!

Any questions please get in touch!
